It's Been Nearly a Year...

...since my last post, apparently. Huh. I'm sorry to say I had no idea. I've had news, mostly events. I haven't had a new release since the fourth Archangel book, but book five is in the works. I'm also working on book five of the Gargoyle Masters series. So, here's some honesty: I don't know when my next book will be out. I, like most people I know, am barely making it financially. And it's not just due to low book sales. I've actually had a pretty good year at in-person events. I've met a lot of great people and put my books into a lot of new hands (YAY!). But every single event costs money to attend in more than one way and its rare that I actually make a profit.

Currently, I have a full-time job and a part-time job aside from my writing. Yes, that means my writing time is limited, but what's really keeping my muse quiet is knowing a finished manuscript will languish in my files until I have the money for editing. I already have book covers purchased for the last two Gargoyle Masters books. And OMG they're GEORGEOUS! It's killing me to not share them. But I want them to be a surprise closer to an actual release date. For now, I might share a few teasers here and there once I get closer to completion.

I apologize for the delay, sincerely. If I ever remember to buy a lottery ticket, maybe I'll win and can pay for everything I'd like to get published (it's a LOT). But until then, please bear with me. I'm doing what I can and will at least get the books finished.

I hope all of you are having a good week. I think we're finally getting cooler weather down here in San Antonio. I can't wait for sweater and soup season!

I will be at the Boerne Book Festival this Saturday until 1 pm at the STAR Biz table with other local authors.

Getting My Groove Back

Teardrops by Bring Me the Horizon:
We hurt ourselves for fun
Force-feed our fear until our hearts go numb
Addicted to a lonely kind of love
What I wanna know
Is how we got this stressed out, paranoid
Everything is going dark
Nothing makes me sadder than my head

Here we are ten months since my last blog post, and I'm writing again. Yes, it's been a barren ten months in this writer's life. Why? Well, I won't bore you with all the life things that have been happening. Lots of change, not necessarily bad, just A LOT. But one of the biggest things is that I've (finally!) completed the fourth book in my Archangels series. I gotta tell ya, I was getting sick of hearing myself promise this book to readers too. I felt like a huge fraud. The biggest liar in the literary world, for sure. I've been saying it will be done by the end of the year for YEARS. So, what took so damn long?

For those of you new to me and/or the series, it was originally published as a trilogy by Entangled Publishing way back in 2013. Well, that's when I signed the contract. The first three books were released 2014-2016. By the time the third one came out I was already lagging mentally, but didn't realize it. Within that timeframe both Ellora's Cave and Samhain Publishing closed. I had fifteen published books between the two of them. It was a huge blow to my mental health, but I didn't grasp how big until I suddenly...couldn't write. I just couldn't even open a Word doc to get started.

Lots of changes happened in my life after that. We moved from Houston where I'd lived for forty-seven years to the San Antonio area. My kids all became adults. My stepfather and one of my aunts died. Author friends I've met along the way have also died, and the Romancelandia landscape has changed drastically. My Facebook page got hacked and it blocked my FB profile that used the same email. I had to reinvent myself for that purpose and try to refriend everyone I lost. I'm still working on that. Lots of people left Twitter and FB for Bluer Skies and TikToks, but I just couldn't find the energy to invest time in a new platform. I also, obviously, forgot I have a blog.

The past few months I've decided I'm done with this shit. I started working on my archangels again with a vengeance. Sorry, I had to put my gargoyles on hold. For some reason, they speak to me more easily and I had to shut them up to coax out the angels. I joined a couple of writer's organizations so I can keep tabs on what everyone else is doing for inspiration. And it's worked. I want to be an active writer again. I slowed down attending events and will still be very selective next year. But I'm hoping to venture further in 2027. And miracle of miracles, I've finished Loving a Demon: Archangels Book 4.

I plan to release the ebook in the next week or so and have the print book available in December at the East TX Book Bash. I might host a book release party locally as well if I can convince a bookstore to host me. I'll let y'all know. Sorry again that it took so long. As a bonus, I'm including a short story at the end with Sel and Lily's HEA. I hope y'all think it was worth the wait.

Blurb:

One look and he knew he’d fight any demon to save her. One taste and he’d fight every obstacle to be with her.

Iris and her sister Lily were raised in a cult by a father that cared more for himself than his daughters. His death helped them find a path to freedom, but not without the loss of Iris’s innocence. Now they’re being watched over by men straight from heaven, but the brothers don’t know about the evil the women had to endure.

Once the sisters reveal the full depth of all they endured Uriel must decide if he can get past the obstacles to remain with Iris, or he’ll have to let her go. Demons are still trying to attract the sisters back into their midst and the newborn child has a calling none of them expected. If Uriel is willing to fall for her, will Iris have to choose between him and her child?

Bonus short story Captivating a Human:

Protecting her is in his nature, loving her is his new calling.

Selaphiel, archangel of heaven, has been protecting humans their entire existence. Now one woman is pushing back on his efforts when she needs him most. Something about Lily calls to him on a primal level, and he can’t resist the pull.
Lily’s entire life has been about protecting her twin sister, so what is her purpose now that Iris no longer needs her protection? Ignoring Sel’s attention is easier said than done, but she tries by moving away. Then the cult she thought she’d left behind finds her and wants her back. Now, she might need Sel more than ever. Her heart has decided; hopefully it isn’t too late to let him in.

The ebook for book 1, Trusting and Angel, is on sale for the month of October at $1.99. Buy it here.

Hello 2025

Happy New Year! Today is day two of 2025 and I've added about 900 words to Loving a Demon: Archangels Book 4. It's not much, but my writing days have been very slow-going lately. I'm hoping for some inspiration as I, a verified pantser, try to figure out what these characters are doing. I'm sure Iris and Uri want their story written as badly as I do. I know Sel and Lily are waiting impatiently in the wings. I already wrote the first scene for their book. Gabe and Mike have also started rumbling in the back of my mind. So, in short, these Archangels want to be DONE.

I haven't begun another Gargoyle Masters book yet, but Sakhr is ready to be up and about. I'm hopeful you'll get to read his story by the end of the year.

Anyone who sees me in person will have the chance to purchase a print copy of Erotic Arts Book 1. This book includes both of my Erotic Arts novellas: Erotic Images and Erotic Influence. I've started writing a third book and plan a fourth, so there will be a second print book in the future.

On the personal side, back in the summer of 2022 we made a BIG move from Houston to the San Antonio area. I gotta admit, it hit me pretty hard to leave my beloved Houston. I'd lived there my entire 47 years and hadn't planned to ever leave. But circumstances with my family dictated that moving closer to my mom would be wise. At the beginning of 2024 she moved into the house we shared with three of our adult children. Needing more room, hubby and I moved into an apartment. Two of the kids decided to flee the nest (again) so hubby and I will be moving back into the house in a couple of weeks. LOTS of chaos and change in my life right now.

Back to my books: Another release this year will be my first published book They Call Me Death. It was originally released in 2009, then re-edited, re-covered, and re-released in 2016. I had briefly toyed with the idea of completely rewriting it in third-person POV. However, book two is already done in first-person, as well as the first half of book three. It didn't make sense to me to have book one as a different POV and I don't think I have it in me to rewrite all three books right now...or ever probably. Writing is more than a hobby but less than a job for me. I don't write to make money, and sometimes the characters go quiet. So, I've learned not to force it.

I plan to reread it and make sure I'm still happy with it overall before letting it out into the world again. But, that will be after I finish Loving a Demon. Since book two is also finished, I might have that one out in 2025 as well.

I will also be traveling a bit in 2025. There will be two events in February (Houston and Kansas City), one in May (Las Vegas), a virtual one in July, and my usual visit to Canton in December. I'm waiting to hear back from two events in Denton in the Spring as well. If there's an event in your area you would like me to attend, please feel free to put in the comments, or email me at missyjane01@gmail.com.

Happy 2025! I hope you have all you hope to have, accomplish all you hope to accomplish, and feel loved and appreciated all year long.

New Release: Breakfast in Bed

Breakfast in Bed

Lizbeth has set a challenge for herself—get down to her ideal weight by her fortieth birthday and then do something out of her comfort zone. Posing nude for a college art class is definitely out of her comfort zone, and the hot gaze of a young man in the front row has her confidence rising with every swipe of his brush on canvas.

In the twelve years since puberty hit, Emanuel has never had such a hard time hiding an erection. The final project in his senior art class is the worst place for it to happen, but with the woman laid out before him like a goddess it’s inevitable. And she is a goddess. Older than him by at least ten years, she wears her maturity like the finest jewels, enticing him more than any woman has in a long time.

A chance meeting puts Lizbeth in Emmanuel’s path, but then tragedy keeps her by his side. As they spend more time together and grow closer, she must decide if committing to a man nearly half her age is what she wants. Emmanuel is all in, or is he? Could it just be circumstances causing the intense feelings to rise so fast, or is it truly love?

Content warning: death of a family member.

Breakfast in Bed is part of my Sophisticated Women series, age-gap romances where the women are older than the men. It's currently available for preorder with a release date of August 16th: https://books2read.com/u/4XlD1a

Adult Excerpt (the following is intended for a mature audience):

He shoved his hair back. “You still don’t trust me.”

She did, more than any man in her life, except for Mike. However, when people got rattled or drank, they sometimes blurted stuff they shouldn’t. Not their fault, but it didn’t make things better. “If by chance you ever say anything about my power, I’ll deny it. I’ll make you sound like a loon. That’s a promise.”

“You think I’m that much of a prick?”

She’d never met a finer man. With him, she felt comfortable and safe. He’d protected her after the tree incident and tried to stop her from behaving like a maniac. Today, they’d become friends without even trying. She should have been scared at the notion and for breaking one of her work rules. Instead, relief washed over her. She wasn’t alone in this. “You’re the man. How many times do I have to keep telling you?”

He chuckled. “God, you’re something.” He searched her face. “Are you all right?”

Her insides still trembled. She suspected from doubt and unease about Pope, and at having Lucian here, close and alone with her. “I won’t lie, I’ve been calmer. Maybe a beer will help. Can I get you one?”

“Yeah. Thanks.”

She delivered the brew, along with damp dish towels to clean their faces and hands. Once they were finished, she dropped the things onto the cocktail table and gestured him to her cloth sofa, large enough to seat four or serve as a makeshift bed for an overnight guest. They sat on adjoining cushions. She didn’t mind having him near. His proximity, scent, and heat unsettled her in a good way. She gulped her beer, hoping it would help her forget the bad stuff.

Lucian sipped his drink and regarded her.

Her throat and face stung with heat. “You’re staring again.”

“Do you mind?”

“Maybe.”

“Then stop making it so easy.”

She lowered her face and smiled. “There’s dust on your shirt and pants.”

He looked and shrugged. “I don’t care, if you don’t.”

His deep voice soothed. His big body promised excitement, comfort, refuge from a crappy world. Stuff she shouldn’t want, at least from him. Work relationships always got complicated no matter how she controlled her feelings. Throwing attraction into the mix made things worse. She gulped more beer.

“You’re sure you’re all right?”

Bubbles tickled her nose. She rubbed it and wanted to lie, tell him to go home, she was okay and didn’t need him here. The words wouldn’t come. She looked at him.

He lifted his shoulders. “What?”

Never had she wanted a man as she did him. “Screw this.” She put her bottle on the cocktail table and crawled onto his lap, straddling his legs. “Don’t talk, please.” She cupped his face. “Unless you don’t want me.”

His eyes rounded. “Are you joking? Hell yeah, I do.”

“Shhh.” She didn’t want words. She needed intimacy and fitted her mouth to his.

He smiled. So did she, their lips lifting together, seeking each other.

The room spun. A ride like no other. His stubble rasped her cheeks and chin. His lips couldn’t have been softer or warmer. Better than what she’d experienced in her dream.

He pulled her close and speared his tongue into her mouth.

She lost her breath. This was past epic and straight into legendary. Even her fantasies weren’t this good.

They kissed with abandon and stark need, each pressing nearer, trying to eliminate any separation between them. His strength thrilled, showing her his power, yet it also felt like a caress.

He growled and tore his mouth free.

“No.” She cupped his head to pull him back to her. “I’m not through.”

“Neither am I.” Holding on to her, he leaned forward, put his bottle on the table then twisted around and pushed her to the sofa. The cushion whooshed from her weight. “Not a word, understand?”

Several locks had fallen over his forehead. His eyes were bright with lust. Face flushed. Fucking gorgeous. “Yes, sir.”

He laughed and captured her mouth with desire, using it with skill. His kiss was savage and unrestrained, tongue burrowed deep, giving her no chance for words. Wild sounds poured from them, more animal than human. It fueled her lust.

She clawed at his shirt and pants, wanting them off.

He pushed up her blouse and tugged down her bra then claimed her breasts. His hands were heavy, hot, and in command. The best thing she’d ever felt.

Reason and good sense fled, replaced by carnal instinct feral in its intensity, nothing timid or gentle about the act.

They rocked and rolled, dry humping, deep kissing. The sofa jerked on the hardwood floor.

He broke free again.

Fuck. He had to stop doing that. She grabbed his hair. “Come back here.”

He hauled her up then pushed to his feet.

She wrapped her legs around his lean hips, her arms about his shoulders.

“Where’s your bedroom?” He looked right, left.

“Behind you.”

He pivoted, carried her across the room, and halted. “Shit. Where’s Rápido?”

“By the chair. Give me a sec.” Using her power, she transported him to his tank. There he could take a soak or bask beneath his warming lamp. Turtle heaven. “What are you waiting for?” She squeezed Lucian’s shoulders. “Get going. I’m about to die.”

“And I’m not?” Huffing, he raced into her bedroom and brought her down to the mattress with him. Springs popped. The frame creaked.

Their mouths were welded together, their kiss long and lingering, deep and wet. The best kind.

He jerked free. “Wait.”

“No.” She kept kissing him.

He pulled away. “We have weapons.” He left the bed and put his Glock on the bureau.

She was right behind him and placed hers next to his.

Grinning, they tore at each other’s clothes. Shoes, pants, tops, and underwear flew.

This time, she pulled him onto the mattress.

Naked, he crawled over her, his rigid cock brushing her thigh. He clasped her wrists. “Don’t even think about moving.”

She liked his alpha side. “Want me to play dead, huh?”

“No way in hell will you ever do that with me.” He slid down her, gripped her knees, and pushed them to her shoulders, exposing her cunt.

Her breath spilled out.

He buried his face in her pussy, his tongue on her clit, flicking it.

Indescribable pleasure shot through her, tingling her inner thighs and mound. Colors dimmed. Sounds faded. The world slipped away, leaving nothing except his hands and mouth on her.

Erica yielded, craving this and him.

New Release: Big Bad Wolf Anthology

Oops! Has it really been over seven months since my last post? I've been trying to finish the fourth book in both my Gargoyle Masters and Archangel anthologies. It's been slow going. In the meantime, I did release a second vampire book titled Blood Rush. Sorry I forgot to post about it here, but if you receive my newsletter you should've seen when it was released.

My next release will be a short story in the first Big Bad Wolf anthology. Release date is July 5th, and I'm joined by four other fabulous authors to bring you some steamy, wolfy stories. Mine is part of my Lone Star Wolf Sanctuary world. If you purchased The Cocky Cockers anthology in 2018 you would've read A Wolf in Men's Clothing. This is another story from that world. The anthology is a fundraiser for the Wolf Conservation Center, and all proceeds will benefit them directly.

BLURB:

The Wolf of Her Dreams by Missy Jane

Nothing ruins Nathaniel’s weekends faster than having to save one of his pendejo cousins from some stupid prank. Being wolf-shifters, the tamest incident can turn deadly fast. When he finds out his younger cousin was picked up by the pound, Nathaniel has no choice but to drive to San Antonio to get him. Hopefully, before anyone realizes he isn’t really a wolfdog.

Anjelica loves working at the San Antonio Humane Society. She especially loves large dogs. When one of them arrives stinking of beer she’s furious at the thought of him being abused. Then the hottest man she’s ever seen shows up to claim him and completely changes her life. One whirlwind romance later has Anjelica reevaluating everything about her life, her home, and love.

You can preorder it from Amazon here.

It will be available in print, and I'll have that info soon.

New Release: Noah Chinn

If you've read any of the books in my Gargoyle Masters series, then you've read work edited by the awesome Noah Chinn. Not only is he a great editor, he's an author as well. The second book in his Get Lost Saga is available for pre-order. Here's book one:

Lost Souls

Maurice "Moss" Foote used to be somebody. Then nobody. Then somebody again, for a while. Now he's back to square one, using his last hundred credits to try and get back his old ship and start over. Again.

Hel doesn't have a last name. Or maybe she does. She was born a slave. Or maybe she wasn't. It's all rather confusing to her, just like the strange compulsion that has her trying to build... something out of spare ship parts in the junkyard she calls home.

When she sees an opportunity to escape on board a rebuilt transport, she takes it, not realizing what she's getting herself into. All she knows is the answers she's looking for are on board that ship. Or maybe they're inside her head.

Roy "Hellno" Herzog left the Silver Legion in favour of becoming a pirate, only they didn't like his attitude any more than the Legion did. Now he's got a lead on a prize so big it could set him up for life, if he can stomach working with other people.

All he's got to do is track down one runaway slave.

Read an excerpt here

And book two will be available on November 1st:

Lost Cargo

Out of fuel and captured by pirates in his beat up chimera of a ship, Maurice "Moss" Foote is having a bad day, until he gets a lead on the score of a lifetime. Easy pickings, if his crew doesn't mind doing a bit of pirating themselves.

Moss certainly doesn't. His ship's computer, Violet, might. And his co-pilot, Hel, definitely will. But one tiny little lie might get them both on board.

What's the worst that could happen?

Roy Herzog is having a worse day. He lost everyone he could stomach working with, then crossed paths with the Silver Legion, the very organization he deserted to become a pirate.

Unfortunately for him, the Legion does not forget, and does not easily forgive. But there might be a way out, and perhaps a shot at revenge against the pilot who nearly killed him.

A pilot who flies a chimera.

Love Beyond Barriers is Available Again

Way back in 2014 I had four loosely linked novellas released through Ellora's Cave publishing. Then EC closed it's doors and the rights reverted back to me. I've been ignoring those books for the most part but finally decided to take a look at them again a few weeks ago. After some light re-editing to update things like my characters not using cell phones or Google maps, I'm releasing them back into the world.

All four books will be available as individual ebooks tomorrow through Draft to Digital (currently available for preorder) and the two print books (two novellas each) are already available for order from Barnes and Noble Press.

I have included content warnings this time, as all four books mention domestic abuse and past trauma, one also includes a short fight scene, but none of the books are graphically violent.

This was also my very first venture in creating the covers completely by myself for both ebook and print, so if the formatting is a little wonky please ignore it. I love my cover artists and plan to keep using them, but the cost for these re-releases is prohibitive.

Also, please note that I will never knowingly use AI in either my writing or cover art. For these books I used Canva and chose their free photos that looked the most realistic to my inexpert eye.

Proof of Life: Author Edition

So...I'm still alive. I haven't been writing much lately though. Nothing on any of my pending books since November, and not much on social media either. But things have been getting better the past couple of weeks. I started going through my plethora of writing files and found two completed novels that need a home. So, I participated in a pitchfest last week. EEK! I won't know the results until the end of the week at the soonest. So everyone cross your fingers for me.

I currently have two books I'm concentrating on: Gargoyle Masters book four, and Archangels book four. They're tentatively titled Born of Prophecy and Loving the Demon respectively. We'll see how it goes. I expect to self-publish each of the remaining books in both series, so it's slow going as I save up the money for editing, covers, etc. If you'd like to help with that endeavor please purchase one of my currently published books, and tell your friend to as well.

While perusing my writing files I also found a cute little short-story I had written for a contest a few years ago then forgot about. I didn't place in the contest but still think it's cute romance. No heat level basically, as the contest was for general fiction not specifically romance. So, here is my gift to you loyal readers:

Hearts On Fire

Julia is a Houston firefighter and Trevor is the news reporter who loves her. Trevor wants to keep their steamy relationship going by proposing marriage, and plans to do it in the most memorable way he knows how.

Trevor cursed under his breath as he stumbled out of the news van and into another humid Houston night. His polo shirt stuck to him like a second skin and beads of sweat gathered on his upper lip. This was really going to suck.

Ahead of him by about one-hundred yards, a warehouse was engulfed in flames. Ash fell from the sky like confetti to dot the dirty concrete, along with his brand new military style boots. He rolled his eyes and ran a hand through his hair, unsurprised to find flecks of ash had already fallen within the raven locks.

“Hey, man, you ready?”

Trevor turned to find his cameraman, Nick, already pointing the camera toward the raging fire. If Trevor didn’t hurry up and say his piece there would be nothing left to report. “Yeah. Let’s go.”

In less than a minute he had his game face on and was answering questions from the anchors sitting in the air-conditioned studio across town. The whole clip lasted about two minutes, and then he was turning off the microphone while Nick took a few final shots.

Trevor was standing in the open door of the van putting equipment away when Nick whistled low. “Damn, there she is. Almost makes me wanna set my house on fire.”

Trevor’s pulse sped up and sweat broke out for a different reason than the heat as he turned to see who had gotten Nick’s attention. And there she was, all five feet-three inches of warm-blooded, Texas woman. Her dark brown hair was covered by the HFD helmet and the protective gear hid her curves, but Trevor had spent most nights of the past two years learning every single one.

“Damn. I forgot she was on call tonight.” He scowled at Nick who was still ogling Julia, but Trevor knew it was just to rile him up. “Put your eyes back in their sockets. You know she’s taken.”

Nick laughed and brushed passed him to put the video camera away. “Yeah, yeah. So when are you gonna make an honest woman outta her?”

“None of your damn business. But keep next June open just in case.”

Nick chuckled. “Ready to go?”

“Nah, you go ahead. I’m waiting around for this one to end.”

Trevor stepped back as Nick slid the door shut. After clapping Trevor on the back, Nick climbed into the van and drove off.

The fire was still blazing but seemed to be more in control. Luckily it was the only building on the block in the older industrial area. The firefighters were still hosing it down as the humid night filled with the acrid scent of burnt wood and metal. Trevor made his way to the closest fire truck and sat on the bumper, as out of the way as he could get while still close enough to watch Julia work. She amazed him. When not in uniform the small woman looked quiet and almost shy, but she hid her boisterous personality well. She was the most generous woman he’d ever met, and one of the hardest working. It had taken a while for him to get over the danger she put herself into every time a call went into the station.

Their two year anniversary was only a few hours away. He planned to make this one memorable, and hoped she wouldn’t be too exhausted to celebrate a little early. Now all he had to do was wait and watch as she did the job she loved, even while his heart stayed in his throat the entire time.

Julia knew the moment Trevor arrived on the scene and almost wished he hadn’t been called to report on the warehouse fire. She had always loved her job. Being a firefighter was a calling, a career, and part of her blood. She had been born into a family of firefighters and never thought to be anything else. Finding a man who wasn’t threatened by her career had been a miracle. The fact that he could sit and watch her do the job without freaking out was a revelation. He was one in a million.

Now she fought to concentrate on the task at hand and forget him sitting a few feet away. Two years was the longest relationship she had ever been in and it almost scared her, but being with him felt too right to question. They had clicked from day one and almost always saw eye to eye. She just hoped they could have at least another two years of bliss.

It took another hour to get the blaze down to simmering embers. After a few more minutes, Julia’s team was dismissed back to the station. They rolled their hoses back up and packed it in. She looked around for Trevor but didn’t see him anywhere. As her team climbed into the truck she asked if anyone else had seen him.

“Yeah, he was here, but I saw him jump in a truck and take off,” Scott said.

“You two have a fight?” Oscar asked. “He kinda looked pissed off.”

The others gave her some good-natured ribbing about fighting with her man, and she joked right along with them. But in the back of her mind was a nagging doubt about why Trevor would have left without saying a single word to her. It wasn’t odd for him to be on the scene. It didn’t happen all the time, but had happened before. They both stayed in professional mode until the fire was out, and talked if they had a chance. He knew he couldn’t ride in the fire truck with her, but who had picked him up?

By the time they pulled into the station she had gone from confused, to mad, to worried. She hopped out and did what needed to be done before hitting the shower. Her shift had ended thirty minutes ago, but of course fires paid no attention to schedules. As soon as she was dressed she tried calling Trevor. It went straight to voicemail but she didn’t leave a message. He would see she called. She texted him a simple message to call her.

Dawn peeked over the horizon as she walked out of the station toward her car. She had just thrown her bag into the passenger seat when someone yelled her name.

“Julia!” She turned to find Scott jogging toward her. “We just got a call. Come on. We need you on this one.”

“What? I didn’t hear the alarm. Didn’t day shift just come on?”

He waved away her questions with one hand while grabbing her arm with the other. “Cap says we need you. Your boyfriend called it in.”

“What? Trevor?”

Fear fueled her veins as she pulled away from Scott and ran back into the station. The trucks weren’t even running but one rear bay door was up and the Captain’s large pick-up was raring to go.

“Julia,” the Captain called to her from the driver’s window. “Let’s go.”

She glanced around in confusion even as she ran to his passenger door. As soon as she was inside he put the truck in drive and flipped on his lights and siren. She pulled her seatbelt on as her heart raced. What the hell was going on and how was Trevor involved? He knew fire was nothing to play around with and he’d never seemed like the daring type before. Maybe he had been called to report the fire and noticed the department wasn’t on the scene yet?

They drove for less than fifteen minutes when the Captain pulled onto a dirt road between two heavily forested areas. Julia’s apprehension spiked. Houston had suffered one of the worst droughts in recent history. A forest fire could spread quickly. She looked through the trees as they drove, praying she wouldn’t see smoke. All she saw were green trees and an overabundance of squirrels.

They pulled into a clearing and stopped at the edge of a sheer drop. Julia recognized the area as Spring Creek, though it was barely a trickle of water at the moment. On the other side was a sandy flatland where people often rode their four-wheelers on the weekends. A lone figure stood waiting.

“What the hell is going on?” she asked. “Is that Trevor?”

He was about two-hundred yards away and below them. She walked as close to the edge of the drop as was safe and raised her arms in question. He waved and turned away.

“Yer boy there called me n’ said I needed to git you to the scene of a far,” the captain said.

Julia almost laughed at the familiar sound of his Southern drawl. Now that she could see Trevor with her own two eyes, the fear and tension slowly drained from her body. “Oh yeah? I don’t see a fire.”

She turned to smile at him but he looked passed her. “I do.”

He pointed across the way and she returned her attention to see lines of fire slowly making their way across the sand. Trevor stood a few feet away, but too close for comfort.

“What’s he doing? Trevor!”

Panic was beginning to take hold when the Captain grabbed her shoulders. “Whoa, girl. Hang on n’ look.”

Her pulse was racing as she fought the urge to slide down the embankment and run to Trevor. After a few seconds her brain finally clicked to what was happening. “Oh my god.”

The line of fire finally stopped spreading and Julia’s eyes registered the full pattern. Written in flames in the sand were the words Marry Me. Trevor moved away and lit another match. He dropped it onto the sand and a flaming heart quickly formed with J+T inside of it. Julia clapped her hands over her mouth as tears burned her eyes.

The Captain laughed. “There’s yer far.”

Commotion behind Trevor drew her attention and she saw the rest of her team walking out of the trees with extinguishers. They all looked up toward her and Trevor spread his arms.

“Well?” he hollered.

“Girl, he’s waitin’ fer yer answer,” the Captain said.

“I don’t have a light,” she replied.

He threw back his head and laughed.

“Oh, all right.” She cupped her hands around her mouth so there would be no doubt on Trevor’s part. Then she hollered out, “YES!”

The men below cheered as Trevor dropped his arms and smiled up at her. He blew her a kiss before turning to accept backslaps from her teammates. She could hardly wait to be in his arms again.

It took a few minutes for the men to put the fires out and clear the scene Trevor had created. She hated to see it go but the Captain confessed Nick had been nearby photographing the whole thing.

“Oh my god. I better not see that on the news tonight,” she said.

He just laughed before leading her back to his truck. She expected to be dropped off somewhere nearby, but they drove all the way back to the station. Two other pick-up trucks arrived right behind them and soon Trevor found her waiting at her car. He approached slowly, looking almost unsure of himself. Julia didn’t want to make a scene in front of the men, but couldn’t stop from falling into Trevor’s arms as soon as he stood close enough.

“I can’t believe you did that,” she said with tears in her voice. “The guys scared the hell out of me when they said you were at the scene of another fire.”

Trevor held her close and kissed her forehead before tilting her chin up with one finger. “I didn’t mean to scare you, baby. I just wanted to do something special, to show you how much you mean to me.”

She sniffed back her tears and smiled up at him. “I love you.”

“I love you too. And I’m going to keep loving you for as long as you let me. You set my heart on fire the moment we met, and I don’t ever want it put out.”

That made her laugh even as a couple of tears slipped free. “That’s so cheesy. Are firefighter puns what I have to look forward to for the rest of our lives?”

He chuckled and planted a soft kiss on her lips. “Oh yeah. I got a million of them. Ready to go home and burn up the sheets?”

She laughed harder. “Are you hot for me?”

“Hotter than hot, baby.”

“Then we better get home before you go up in flames.”

She tried to pull away from his arms but he held tight. “Hang on. One more thing.”

Trevor dropped to one knee and pulled a small black box from his pocket. He popped it open before holding it up to her. Inside rested a beautiful silver ring, with tiny diamonds in a peculiar shape.

“Is that…is that what I think it is?” she asked.

“It’s in the shape of a burning flame.”

“Oh my god.”

She pulled the ring free and slipped it on as he stood. Then she jumped into his arms again. “I love you so damn much. Even with all the silly fire references.”

“You light up my life.”

She was laughing so hard he could barely kiss her.

“Okay, okay,” she said. “Enough already. I’ll need to think of some news reporter puns to say to you.”

He sighed dramatically before kissing her again. “Here’s a newsflash, I can hardly wait.”

She groaned and kissed him to keep him from saying anything else.

“Hey, cool it off over there before we hose you down,” Scott called out.

Trevor and Julia turned to find most of the station watching them.

“Oops. I kinda forgot about them,” she said.

“Me too. We better go.”

“You got it, news man.”

He started humming Great Balls of Fire and she laughed all the way home.
